How to claim your Angi listing (and why AI cares).

Angi profiles get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity more than any other site on the web. Here is how to claim yours for free, and what to fill in first.

Chart showing angi.com as the number one most-cited source with 1,867 AI citations, split 903 ChatGPT, 832 Perplexity, 132 Google AI

Out of roughly 14,000 AI searches we ran for plumbing questions, angi.com was cited 1,867 times. That is one in five of every 9,293 citations we logged. ChatGPT quoted Angi 903 times, Perplexity 832, Google AI Overviews 132. No other website in the entire dataset came within shouting distance. And the profile the robots keep reading? It is free.

The short answer: Claim your free Angi pro profile at signup.angi.com/pro, fill every field with the exact service language homeowners use, and get real reviews on it, because AI engines cite Angi pages more than any other source when recommending a plumber and a bare or unclaimed profile gives them nothing to quote.

Here is the short version, if you would rather watch it than read it:

Or the 80-second version in text: Out of roughly 14,000 AI searches, one website got quoted more than any other — Angi, with 1,867 citations, 903 of them in ChatGPT alone. The part that tends to annoy people: Angi has probably already built you a profile off public licensing records, and you have never logged into it. Claiming it at signup.angi.com/pro is free, and free is not the same thing as buying leads — you do not have to buy leads. Once you are in, two things actually matter. Get reviews on it, because a profile with zero reviews is not even searchable on Angi's own site. And list every service separately — not "plumbing", but tankless install, sewer line repair, slab leak. That is the language an AI engine matches against.

Why the robots love Angi

Language models are lazy readers. They prefer sources that are structured the same way every time, because a consistent page is a cheap page to summarise.

Angi is exactly that. Every pro profile has the same skeleton: business name, city, service categories, star rating, review count, review text, hours, service area. When someone types "best plumber in Fort Worth for a slab leak" into ChatGPT, the model is not evaluating your craftsmanship. It is looking for a page that already contains a list of plumbers, in that city, with ratings attached. Angi hands it that list on a plate.

Your own website, by contrast, says you are the best. Every plumber's website says that. It is a claim, not a corroboration. That is the entire reason directories punch above their weight in AI answers, and we broke down the full ranking of sources in the sites AI reads before recommending a plumber.

Here is the part that stings a little: your Angi profile probably already exists, and you probably did not write it. Angi builds listings from public data. There may be a page out there right now with your company name, a phone number from 2019, no photos, no description, and no reviews, and an AI engine may be reading it as the definitive summary of your business.

Claiming the listing costs nothing (and the sales calls are separate)

Let us kill the confusion up front, because it stops a lot of owners from doing this at all.

There are three different things with Angi's name on them:

  1. The free profile. You claim it, you fill it in, you keep it. Angi's own FAQ confirms you can set up a free profile to share information about your business.
  2. Angi Leads. Pay-per-lead. You buy homeowner requests, usually shared with several other pros.
  3. Angi Ads. Paid placement and upgraded profile treatment, sold on an annual agreement.

Number one does not require numbers two or three. Claim the free profile, decline the upsell, and the profile stays.

Will they call you? Yes. Angi is a public company now, having completed its spin-off from IAC in 2025, and it has revenue targets. You will get a call, probably several. Say no. It is thirty seconds of mild awkwardness against a listing that AI engines cite more than any other domain on the internet.

To claim: go to signup.angi.com/pro, choose your primary trade, enter your zip and business details, and take the "business already listed" path if Angi finds an existing profile for you. You will verify by phone or email. If you want to be listed as Angi Approved, the owner has to clear a criminal background check, and Angi displays Approved pros above the rest in its own search results.

Fill it in like a human wrote it

The default instinct is to type "Full service plumbing. Family owned. Licensed and insured." and go back to work. That paragraph is invisible to an AI engine because it is identical to forty thousand others.

Write the way your customers talk. Nobody types "residential plumbing solutions" into ChatGPT. They type "who can replace a 40 gallon water heater in Round Rock this week."

Work through these in order:

  • Business description. Name the specific jobs: tankless water heater installs, sewer line replacement, slab leak detection, repipes, gas line work. Name your cities. Two hundred words beats forty.
  • Service categories. Select every category you genuinely do. Categories are how Angi decides which lists you appear on, and those lists are what gets quoted.
  • Service area. Draw it honestly. A map that covers three counties when you realistically serve twelve miles produces leads you will not run.
  • Hours and emergency availability. If you answer at 2am, say so. "24/7 emergency" is one of the most common qualifiers in AI plumbing queries.
  • Licence and insurance numbers. These get surfaced in AI answers as trust signals more often than owners expect.
  • Photos. Ten real job photos beat one stock image of a wrench. Before-and-after of a corroded galvanised repipe does more work than any adjective.
  • Phone number. Match it exactly to your Google Business Profile and your website. Mismatched numbers across sources make models hedge, and a hedging model recommends someone else.

That last point is the same discipline that keeps your Google listing healthy. If you have not tightened that up yet, start with verifying your Google Business Profile and then mirror the exact same details onto Angi.

Reviews are the on switch

Here is the thing most guides bury. An Angi profile with zero reviews is not searchable on Angi's own site. Angi has said a listing only becomes visible and searchable on angi.com once it has reviews.

So a claimed-but-empty profile is a filing cabinet nobody opens. The listing exists, but it is not in the lists that AI engines scrape.

You need a handful of reviews to switch it on. Ask the customers who already like you: the family whose sewer line you replaced last month, the landlord you have swapped six water heaters for. Send the direct link to your Angi profile in a follow-up text the same day the job closes. Same-day asks convert several times better than a request sent a week later, when the panic has faded and they have forgotten your name.

Do not buy reviews. Do not have your cousin write one. Angi removes them and it is not worth the risk to a profile this valuable.

Free listing vs Angi Leads vs Angi Ads

Free profileAngi LeadsAngi Ads

CommitmentNoneAnnual agreement, auto-renewing, plus a platform feeTypically a 12-month term, auto-renewing
ExclusivityN/AShared with several pros by default; exclusive leads cost a large multipleN/A
Getting outDelete it wheneverNotice period, and early termination charged on remaining contract valueNotice period, same structure
Helps AI cite youYesIndirectly, via reviews from jobs you winMarginally

Read that last row carefully. The thing that gets you cited by ChatGPT is the profile and the reviews on it. That part is free.

Whether the paid products make sense is a separate maths problem, and an honest one. If a shared lead costs you $60 and you close one in five, your real cost per booked job is $300. On a $180 drain clear, that is a loss. On an $8,000 repipe, that is a bargain. Run the numbers for your actual job mix and average ticket before you sign anything with an early-termination clause attached. If the answer is that shared leads do not work for you, that budget almost always performs better in Local Services Ads, where you pay per lead but the lead is yours.

Do this in the next hour

Claim the listing. Fill every field. Text your last ten happy customers a review link. That is the whole job, and it costs nothing but an hour and one uncomfortable phone call with a salesperson.

Then treat it as one node in a bigger picture. Angi is the most-cited source, not the only one, and a directory profile cannot compensate for a website that says nothing specific about tankless installs or slab leaks. That work sits in your plumbing SEO foundation, and the directories amplify it rather than replace it.

We start by telling you the truth: most plumbing companies are paying for marketing and have no idea whether it works. If you want someone to look at where AI engines are actually finding you, and where they are finding your competitor instead, book a call. We will tell you what we see, including the parts you will not enjoy hearing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free to claim my plumbing company on Angi?

Yes. Angi lets you set up a free business profile with your description, services, service area, hours, contact details and photos. Claiming a listing is completely separate from buying Angi Leads or Angi Ads, and no salesperson can make you buy anything to keep the free profile. Start at signup.angi.com/pro and use the already-listed path if a profile for your company exists.

Why do ChatGPT and Perplexity keep recommending Angi plumbers?

Because Angi pages are structured, consistent and easy for a language model to read. Every profile has the same fields in the same order: company name, city, services, reviews, rating. In our study of roughly 14,000 AI searches, angi.com produced 1,867 citations out of 9,293 total. No other single domain came close.

Do I have to buy Angi Leads to show up on Angi?

No, but an unclaimed or review-free profile does very little. Angi has said a listing only becomes visible and searchable on angi.com once it has reviews, so the free profile plus real reviews is the minimum viable version. Paid Angi Leads and Angi Ads buy placement and lead volume, not credibility.

How much do Angi leads cost for a plumbing company?

Reported costs vary widely by market and job type, roughly from the mid-teens per lead for a basic service call to over one hundred dollars for high-ticket work in competitive metros. Contractors also report annual agreements that auto-renew, a platform fee, and early-termination charges based on the remaining contract value. Read the paperwork before you sign.

Are Angi leads shared with other plumbers?

Standard Angi leads are shared. Contractors commonly report the same homeowner request being sold to several pros at once, which is why cost per booked job is far higher than cost per lead. Exclusive leads are offered at a significant premium. Price your expectations around the close rate, not the lead price.
