ChatGPT can't see your Yelp page. That's about to change.

Yelp sent 1,037 citations to AI answers and exactly zero of them to ChatGPT. The reason is a text file, not your reviews — and it stops mattering soon.

Chart showing yelp.com as the number four most-cited source with 1,037 AI citations, split zero ChatGPT, 752 Perplexity, 285 Google AI

Zero. That is how many times a Yelp page showed up as a source in ChatGPT across our whole citation study. Yelp finished fourth overall with 1,037 citations when AI tools recommended a plumber — 752 of them from Perplexity, 285 from Google's AI, and none at all from ChatGPT. Not a handful. Not a rounding error. Zero.

The short answer: ChatGPT cannot read your Yelp business page because Yelp's robots.txt file blocks OpenAI's crawlers from every business listing, but a licensing deal announced in July 2026 pipes Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details straight into ChatGPT anyway — so a claimed, complete Yelp page is about to start earning citations it currently cannot earn.

Here is the short version, if you would rather watch it than read it:

The zero has nothing to do with your reviews

Every website publishes a file at the root of its domain called robots.txt. Think of it as the sign on the yard gate: this truck can pull in, that one can't. It has no lock on it, but the big companies honour it.

Yelp's sign is specific. Googlebot is waved through to business pages. OpenAI's crawlers are not. Pull up Yelp's robots.txt and you find OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User each given a hard disallow, with a narrow exception for Yelp's own editorial articles. Anthropic's and Perplexity's crawlers get the same treatment.

CrawlerYelp business pagesWhat it means for you
GooglebotAllowedGoogle's AI can read your page
GPTBot (OpenAI)BlockedYour page never entered training data
OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-UserBlockedChatGPT cannot fetch your page live
PerplexityBotBlockedYet Perplexity still cited Yelp 752 times

That last row is the interesting one. Perplexity's crawler is blocked at the gate too, and Yelp still turned up in 752 of its answers — which tells you the Yelp brand and its business data reach AI answers through more routes than a straight crawl. ChatGPT was the one system with no route at all.

So the zero was never a verdict on your star rating. It was a plumbing problem, in the literal sense: no pipe.

July 2026: OpenAI paid for the pipe

On 23 July 2026, Yelp and OpenAI made public a data licensing agreement. ChatGPT can now surface Yelp reviews, star ratings, photos and business information inside answers to local queries, with Yelp's branding and links displayed alongside. A Request a Quote integration is on the way, which would let someone chatting with ChatGPT ask three plumbers for a price without leaving the chat window.

The deal is non-exclusive and the financial terms weren't disclosed. Yelp's CEO summed up the pitch as: if you want to answer local queries, you really need Yelp. Reported coverage put the licensed corpus at roughly 330 million cumulative reviews across more than 8 million business listings.

Here is the part that matters to you. That pipe carries whatever is on your page. If your Yelp listing is an unclaimed stub with a wrong phone number, a 2019 photo of a van you sold, and no service list, that is what gets licensed into ChatGPT. Nobody at OpenAI is going to fill in the gaps for you.

Yes, you hate Yelp. Claim it anyway.

I know the grudge. A sales rep called you eleven times. A one-star review from someone who was quoted $340 and expected $90 sat at the top of your page for a year. You paid for ads once and couldn't tell what came of it. Plenty of plumbers have earned their opinion of Yelp honestly.

None of that changes the arithmetic. Claiming the page is free, verification takes a few minutes, and you can ignore every upsell that follows. What you're buying with that half hour isn't leads from Yelp's own traffic — it's control over a record that three different AI systems are already reading, and a fourth just paid money to read.

Treat it the way you treat your licence number on the side of the truck. You don't expect the sticker to ring the phone. You expect it to be correct when someone checks.

Do not ask your customers for a Yelp review

This is the one that gets plumbing companies in trouble, because everything else in your marketing trains you to do the opposite. Your CRM fires a review request after every job. Your techs hand out cards. On Google that is exactly right, and if you haven't sorted that side out yet, start with verifying your Google Business Profile.

On Yelp it backfires. Yelp's guidelines flatly prohibit asking customers, mailing lists, friends or family for reviews, and prohibit offering discounts, freebies or payment in exchange. Their automated recommendation software deprioritises reviews that look prompted, which means the five glowing reviews you generated on Tuesday can land in the "not recommended" bucket where they don't count toward your rating and barely count as visible.

The scale of that filter is public. Yelp's 2025 Trust and Safety report covered roughly 22 million reviews contributed that year: 70% recommended, 17% not recommended, 11% removed. Yelp also placed 128 Compensated Activity Alerts on business pages after finding evidence of payment offered for reviews, plus 363 alerts for suspicious review activity. A Consumer Alert is a banner on your own page telling shoppers you may have gamed your reviews. There is no version of that which is worth five extra stars.

There is a dry detail in Yelp's robots.txt worth noting here: the page that lists a business's filtered reviews is blocked from every crawler, Googlebot included. Solicited reviews don't just fail to help. They go somewhere no AI system can even see.

What you do instead: earn them passively. Put the Yelp logo on your invoice and your van without a request attached. Reply to every review you have, good and bad, in a normal human voice. Respond fast to quote requests, because response time is visible on your page.

The 30-minute claim and fill checklist

  1. Go to biz.yelp.com/claim, search your business name, and claim the existing listing rather than creating a duplicate. Verify by phone.
  2. Fix the NAP: exact legal name, the address you actually dispatch from, and the phone number that rings your office. Match it character for character with your Google Business Profile.
  3. Set the primary category to Plumbing, then add the secondary categories you genuinely serve — water heater installation, drain cleaning, and so on.
  4. Fill in Specialties, History and Meet the Owner. These are free text fields, they are prose, and prose is what language models extract cleanly. Name your city and your services in plain sentences.
  5. Add real photos with captions. Your team, your trucks, actual finished work. Caption them the way you'd describe the job to a customer.
  6. Add your licence number and service area. Set your hours, including whether you genuinely run emergency service at 2am.
  7. Turn on Request a Quote notifications and answer them the same day. Yelp Assistant, their AI booking layer, routes quote requests across 450-plus service categories, and slow responders get skipped.
  8. Reply to every existing review. Short, specific, unbothered. Never argue about price in public.

Half an hour, once, and then ten minutes a quarter. That's the whole job.

What about paying Yelp?

Separate decision, and a defensible one either way. Published starting prices put Yelp Ads at around $150 a month — roughly $5 a day — with the Upgrade Package near $180 and a bundle of both around $270. It's a cost-per-click auction, so there's no honest public average click price for plumbing; the estimate inside your own account for your category and city is the only number worth quoting.

Our position is the boring one. The free page is close to a no-brainer given what the OpenAI deal is about to do. The ads are a channel you test against your actual cost per booked job, the same as any other, and for most residential plumbers the money works harder in Google's Local Services Ads first. Yelp Ads are a maybe. A claimed Yelp page is a yes.

None of this works in isolation, either. Yelp is one of the sources AI checks; the rest of the list is in our breakdown of the websites AI reads before recommending a plumber, and the whole point is consistency across all of them. Your own site still has to back up what the directories say, which is where plumber SEO does most of the work.

You're paying for marketing. You probably have no idea whether any of it shows up when someone asks ChatGPT for a plumber in your town. We can tell you — we run the check, show you exactly which sources cite you and which cite the company three miles away, and give you the list either way. Book a call and we'll start by telling you the truth about where you actually stand.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Yelp reviews?

It does now, through a licensing deal, but it cannot crawl your Yelp page directly. Yelp's robots.txt blocks OpenAI's crawlers from every business page. In July 2026 Yelp and OpenAI announced a non-exclusive licensing agreement that feeds Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business information into ChatGPT's local answers, with Yelp branding and links attached. The pipe is the deal, not the crawler.

Is claiming a Yelp business page free for plumbers?

Yes. Claiming and verifying your Yelp Page costs nothing, and most of what makes the page useful is free too: business information, hours, categories, photos with captions, the Specialties and History sections, and replying to reviews, messages and quote requests. Yelp Ads and the Upgrade Package are separate paid products you can decline and still have a complete page.

Can I ask my customers to leave me a Yelp review?

No, and this is the one place where the usual advice will hurt you. Yelp's guidelines prohibit asking customers, mailing lists, friends or family for reviews, and prohibit offering discounts or freebies in exchange. Yelp's software deprioritises reviews that look prompted, and businesses caught paying for reviews can get a Consumer Alert posted on their page for everyone to see.

How much do Yelp Ads cost for a plumbing company?

Yelp Ads start at published minimums of around $150 a month, roughly $5 a day, with the Upgrade Package around $180 a month and a bundle of both near $270. It is a cost-per-click auction, so there is no reliable public average click price for plumbing — use the estimate Yelp shows inside your own account for your category and city.

Why does Perplexity cite Yelp so much more than Google's AI?

In our citation data Yelp appeared 752 times in Perplexity answers versus 285 in Google's AI results, out of 1,037 total. Perplexity leans heavily on directory and review pages when it builds local answers, while Google's AI tends to pull from its own Business Profile data first. Yelp is a much bigger deal on Perplexity than most plumbers assume.
